Comments on Nominees Qualifications:
Shelly began working as a volunteer for the Young Singers Foundation to raise monies for scholarships and grants for young people in high school and college. She assisted and worked at the Young Singers Foundation, fundraising silent auction booths at Regional and International events. She is now the Chair of the Management Committee for our International organization.
I’ve had the privilege of knowing and working with Shelly over the past 10 years and all I can say is “WOW.” She in one of the most inspirational people I know. Not only does she come up with amazing ideas for the chorus and the barbershop world, but she jumps right in and implements them and sees them to completion. “What do you need?” and “How can I help?” are two phrases Shelly constantly uses.
She is the driving force behind the Xpress Singers successful high school “Idol” competition which gives $1,000 to the winner. She coordinates the try-outs, the semi-finals and final show. Shelly also keeps in touch with many of the young singers throughout the years. The Idol winner, from a few years ago, is now in Los Angeles making a name for herself in the music and acting world.
Shelly has also been responsible, in large measure, for the success of the Montana Quartet Retreat for more than 7 years. She organizes the entire weekend, from securing the coaches well in advance, to reserving the facility, creating the schedule and making sure everything runs smoothly. The faculty that we’ve had these past 7 years has been extraordinary and they have only praises for Shelly. They’re parting words are usually “When can I come back?”
I sing lead as a dual member in the Helena Xpress Singers chorus where Shelly is the Lead Section Leader. She takes her job very seriously and does it extremely well; constantly scheduling extra lead section rehearsals and, with her knowledge of barbershop, is able to give helpful instructions on how to sing better. She is always looking for ways to take the level of singing higher.
As the Regional Educational Coordinator, Shelly, in her usual fashion, hit the ground running with ideas on how to bring fantastic faculty and education to the widespread area of Region 24. She has done an amazing job as Education Coordinator for Region 24 and is a valued member of the Xpress Singers where she has contributed to her chorus heavily by writing scripts for their shows, being involved in Marketing, and holding numerous jobs on the Management Team.
Since 2005 Shelly has been a faithful dual member of Five Valley Chorus and a valued member of the front row where she has displays her wonderful ability to shine as a performer on stage. She is an enormous asset to every committee and every team she is on; working with Shelly on any project is truly a pleasure.
Shelly and husband, Mike live in Helena and have 2 grown children who are in college. Outside of the barbershop world, Shelly keeps busy being the Database Manager for the Montana State Employees Retirement Funds system and still finds the time and energy to share her love of music with all of Montana, Region 24 and the rest of the Sweet Adeline world. She’s been known to perform a mean water ballet in Canyon Ferry Lake every now and then and will be sharing her musical talent with Region 24 when Shelly and her new quartet “Boom” compete in Boise! We are honored and so lucky to have her with us!
